When things don’t go well in your practice, is it a people issue, or a systems issue?
Do you find yourself frustrated because your expectations aren’t being met, but you don’t have the time or energy to provide adequate training?
How much time do you spend training your team?
Do you view training as a one-time event, or an ongoing process?
It’s not unusual for dentists to throw a new hire in to the fire without much direction at all. Front Desk team members are probably the least trained of all roles in most practices. Mainly because in many cases, they have more experience with the software, billing, and insurance then most dentists. The problem is that the experience they have is not in YOUR office, but someone else’s. The training they have doesn’t necessarily align with your vision. You end up making assumptions that they’re meeting your expectations and, as you can imagine, that assumption ultimately leads to all sorts of problems.
Even with your clinical team, again, most of the time it’s “baptism by fire” training! This might involve a few minutes running through the schedule before patients arrive, then it’s time to jump right in! You limp through the day only to find out that your employee’s 15 years of training as an assistant doesn’t even come close to meeting your standards!
Other Industries Offer More Training…
Let’s look outside of dentistry. The Broadmoor, a 5-diamond hotel in Colorado Springs, has a 2-day orientation for new employees, followed by several days of training that can vary depending on the position. Disney has training that can span as much as 2 WEEKS, to include both written and practical tests before they are allowed to be “on stage.” Why is it that the entertainment industry has better training systems in place then your typical dental office??
It’s Hard to Do It All by Yourself
As a small business owner, you are spread thin. What would it look like to have a “systems manual” of sorts in place so that every operation that is required to effectively run the business is covered? Forget about “secret” systems that only one person knows. Instead, imagine a method that not only offers simple, step-by-step processes in the event a team member has to be absent unexpectedly, but one that makes it easy to train new hires to meet your vision in a systematic way.
